Benefits of hypnotherapy: research indicates it helps quit smoking

A study presented at the American College of Chest Physicians finds that after a hypnotherapy session, people are more likely to be nonsmokers after just 6 months, compared to those who underwent nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) or stopped smoking without assistance. Faysal Hasan, MD, FCCP, North Shore Medical Center, Salem, MA, says : “Hypnotherapy appears to be quite effective and a good modality to incorporate into a smoking cessation program after hospital discharge.”

Researchers conducted this study by comparing the quit rates of 67 smoking individuals, that were hospitalised with a cardiopulmonary diagnosis. All patients had shown desire to stop smoking prior to entering the study.  When given their discharge, patients were distributed in four groups, depending on what treatment they had preferred to help them quit smoking: hypnotherapy, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), the combination of both and a group that chose no to be given any treatment.

After 26 weeks of their discharge, researchers found that 50% of the patients treated with only hypnotherapy had become nonsmokers, compared to 15.8% of patients that chose NRT and 25% of those that did not had treatment. The group that received hypnotherapy and NRT also showed a good quitting rate, since 50% of the group stopped smoking.

Alvin V. Thomas, MD, FCCP, President of the American College of Chest Physicians commented: “The results of this study and many others confirm that using a multimodality approach to smoking cessation is optimal for success.”
