Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of common pains occurring within the body, most famously known for its treatment for back pain sufferers.
Osteopaths use manual techniques to treat the root cause of the complaint, not just the superficial symptoms. For example, headaches can be from dysfunction within the neck or muscle tension among others. In this instance, an osteopath would use appropriate techniques in order to help reduce relevant muscular tension and dysfunction within the cervical spine (neck part of the spinal column).
Techniques that Osteopaths often use to help with common pains include massage, articulation of joints, manipulation and cranial osteopathy.
When visiting an osteopath for the first time questions about your current problem will be asked, such as when it first started, where the pain is, aggravating factors and so on. Then a postural examination will be carried out, involving spinal and particular joint movements relevant to your presenting problem in order for a diagnosis to be made. The osteopath will then discuss with you about what is causing your discomfort and what the most appropriate treatment plan for you will be.
During your postural examination, your osteopath may ask you to remove relevant pieces of clothing such as top or trousers. If you feel more comfortable wearing sports shorts please feel free to bring them along to change into.
Conditions we regularly treat:
Osteopathy is not just for adults, babies and children can also benefit from treatment. A gentle form of osteopathy is predominantly used with this young age group called cranial osteopathy, which releases stresses and strains of the body that may be preventing the body from functioning properly. These stresses and strains are commonly from labour where large amounts of compressive forces are upon the child within the birth canal, most visibly the head. A misshapen newborn’s head is not uncommon, although if the remoulding process is slow or incomplete the baby can experience issues that are not always in the head region. Cranial Osteopathy can help with the remoulding process and release any stresses or strains that may by causing problems.
As the foetus grows during pregnancy, the body adjusts to accommodate the growing child. With the extra strains and postural changes upon the body, pregnancy commonly causes/exacerbates back pains, pelvic issues (such as SPD) from the softening ligaments, sciatica and leg pains. Osteopathic treatment may help with all of these common maternity complaints and help maintain overall good posture during and after pregnancy.
Osteopathy is a well recognised and established system of diagnosis and treatment, which focuses mainly on the structural and functional integrity of the body.
