What is Brief Therapy?
Brief therapy is a relatively modern development in psychotherapy. In the past, therapy was seen as a very open-ended process, where it was perfectly normal for someone to visit their therapist twice a week for years and years. But in the late 1970s, a group of psychologists in America began to explore how people can make lasting, positive changes in their lives in a much shorter time frame than this.
One of the insights of brief therapy is that many of our problems are essentially bad habits (either mental or physical habits). And the key to breaking a bad habit is ultimately to start doing something different, to start thinking in new ways, and to start doing new things.
Brief therapy techniques include goal setting, finding exceptions to the problem, therapeutic tasking, using humour and paradox, viewing the problem from fresh, new perspectives, and much more.
And the essence of brief therapy is always about helping you to make the changes that you want to make in a focused, effective, practical way.
What is Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy?
Solution-focused hypnotherapy naturally dovetails with brief therapy, and it shares very similar historical roots.
It is all about evoking your natural strengths and resources as a human being, and then connecting these resources to the times in your life when you need them.
In this way of working, the role of the hypnotherapist is not to tell you how to live your life. A solution-focused hypnotherapist simply helps you to access your own innate creativity, confidence and resilience, so that you can let go of old, unhelpful thought patterns, and so that you can be more of who you want to be in life.
