Dr Amit Biswas is a Senior Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist and Developmental Neuropsychiatrist. He has extensive experience (20 years in NHS) and specialist expertise of working with young people presenting with complex psychiatric problems and/or neuro- developmental disorders (ASD, ADHD, Intellectual Disability etc.) as well as challenging or risk taking behaviours or suicidality.
As a Consultant, he worked both within Inpatient and Community CAMHS services, in NHS and Private organisations (national units) leading specialised multidisciplinary teams. He has led both Generic CAMHS and Specialist Learning Disability services in London, Oxford, Cambridge and other areas. Currently, he is working in Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation NHS Trust and doing private practice in Cambridge and North London.
Amit received his Psychiatry training in Oxford and higher specialist Child / Adolescent Psychiatric training from London Deanery (St Georges). He has comprehensive understanding and experience of the assessment and the management of a range of psychological and behavioural disorders of childhood and adolescence such as anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress, OCD, psychosis, bipolar disorder, self harm etc. He also works closely with young people who present multiple and complex disorders, neuro-disability and a range of needs.
As a doctor, he focuses on medical management of psychiatric disorders but building trusting relationship, engaging and empowering young people to collaborate towards their recovery is the utmost important part of his work. His priority is to provide high quality treatment in a safe, compassionate, flexible and positive manner.
He is trained in a range of psychological therapies and integrates these approaches in my practise, such as CBT, Mindfulness, Systemic work, Positive Psychology, Narrative therapy, EMDR and so on.
Amit enjoys teaching and speaks globally and in Media to raise awareness and promote positive mental health. He was a Hon Senior Lecturer at University of London. He is an approved trainer of Royal College of psychiatrists (member since 2002) and taught both undergraduate & postgraduate students in various Universities in UK, including Cambridge, as well as abroad. He also supervised senior trainees, junior Consultants and trainees of other disciplines. He lectures nationally and Internationally on Wellbeing, resilience, Mindfulness and Mindful Leadership.
Amit had been involved in several research projects including Neuroscience-Schizophrenia research at Institute of Psychiatry (The Maudsley) and received various grants in the past. At present, he is developing a research study on Mindfulness with Brunel University students.
Amit is also a writer and a film maker and his film on Autism has received an award from the Mayor of London. His first feature film Bridge (2016) has toured worldwide in international film festivals and received 12 International awards and high critical acclaim. (www.bridgethefilm.com). Amit has served as Hon Board member of International organisations and charities like Scientific and Medical Network.
