New treatment for back pain: the Dorn Method explained

Most of us experience some kind of back pain at some point in our lives.  Many even suffer from such chronic pain and miss days off work because of it. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to do something about that nagging pain yourself? The DORN Method empowers you to help yourself.  The method is named after its German founder, Dieter Dorn who developed the technique more than 30 years ago. It has been a popular treatment in German speaking countries for decades, but it has only recently come to England as well.

The technique is called method rather than therapy, as it is a gentle “fix in motion” method that can be controlled by the client. The client helps the practitioner by swinging a leg or the arms or moving the head depending on the area that is worked on. The movement “distracts” the muscles so they cannot resist the correction done by very gentle pressure of the thumb against the spine. It’s a gentle, effective and safe treatment, free of unpleasant side effects.

The DORN Method is based on the idea that one leg – even if it is only very slight – is longer than the other, this can misalign or twist the hip and that again may have a knock-on-effect on the spine to cause back discomfort. Therefore every treatment starts with a test for even leg lengths. If this fails, the ankle, knee and/or hip might be misaligned and will be treated first. Then the sacro-iliac area will be looked at and may need to be treated before moving on to the whole of the spine (lower, middle and upper back as well as the neck).

What sets this unique technique apart from others is that every step of the “therapy” can be shown to the client to do at home for self-help without assistance. This allows the person to stabilise if not even further improve the situation in between sessions and to manage the pain. Although a course of 3-6 treatments is recommended, a single treatment can often do a lot for the client. The DORN Method is particularly good for someone who suffers from back pain, neck pain, headaches or migraines, joint pain, sciatica or scoliosis.

Special Offer (until end of November 2011): £5 off your first treatment of any therapy provided by and booked with me when you mention this article.

Interview with Joseph Robinson

Having just celebrated a year of activity we decided to start a series of interviews to publicly ask to our practitioners what they think about working at Salus Wellness.

Joseph, what is your specialisation and how long have you been practicing?

I am an Osteopath specialising in treatment and management of chronic pain. As a keen sportsman I also hold a special interest in treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries and athletic development. I have been practicing now for 1 year.

When did you start working at Salus Wellness and what influenced your decision to work here?

I started practicing at Salus Wellness Clinics as my second practice in October 2010. At the time I had been looking to set up a second practice for a couple of weeks and had several potential sites. I chose to move forward with Salus Wellness as it offered all I wanted in terms of city centre location with good footfall and still plenty of close by parking available throughout the day, great facilities and the right professional and welcoming working atmosphere that is so important in my profession and to the Cambridge ProCare brand.

How many clients do you see in an average week?

I practice at Salus Wellness 3 days a week seeing on average 10 patients a day with peak numbers of up to 18 patients in a day.

What is your general view of the facilities offered by Salus Wellness?

Salus Wellness has achieved a high standard of facilities throughout, creating a naturally welcoming atmosphere without losing any sense of professionalism and clinical cleanliness.

How did the help received from Salus Wellness in terms of running your business, sales, and marketing helped to develop your business?

It is impossible to be a master of all things, having the business expertise and hands on assistance of the Salus Wellness management team has been vital in the success I have enjoyed in my first year at Salus Wellness and further more into the success of Cambridge ProCare Osteopathy’s development as a brand across both its clinics. The support of having the Salus Wellness team behind me has meant I have been able to focus more attention onto developing myself as a skilled and professional practitioner whilst still learning a tremendous amount of applied business skills from the highly experienced individuals that make up the Salus Wellness management team.

What are your future plans at the clinic?

As Cambridge ProCare Osteopathy’s central Cambridge clinic Salus Wellness is going to a focal point of growth for the company over the coming years, I hope to regularly increase practitioner hours at Salus Wellness as our client base demand grows.

Would you recommend Salus Wellness to other practitioners?

Yes.

What advice would you give to new practitioners?

Salus Wellness can provide the perfect setting and all the tools a practitioner needs to grow their business but it is, ultimately, up to the individual to use those tools to manufacture their own success in business.

For private healthcare businesses in today’s economic climate success and growth are there for those who actively strive for it, there is no such this as standing still, biding time. If you are not moving forward you are moving backwards.

One Year of Successes

Building a business from scratch can be challenging and, at the same time, very rewarding when results are outstanding.  Salus Wellness Clinics celebrated this week its first anniversary; the complementary health centre is now a well established business that fits well in the local community, offering a rich variety of top quality complementary health services to a broad range of members of the public.

“We spotted a gap in the market and then we found this building with amazing potential”

states Luca Senatore (in the picture on the right) sales director and co-founder, who initially planned this venture

“and we knew it  would have been a success given the  innovative approach we had in mind for the clinic”.

The extra value added offered by Salus Wellness is to assist all practitioners with hands-on business coaching, consultancy and training, in areas such as sales, marketing and customer service.

“The majority of practitioners decide to qualify in hypnotherapy, massage or acupuncture because they have a passion for helping people which is very rewarding indeed; many of them do it without any previous experience in running a business and they fail to realise the need of entrepreneurial spirit that is necessary to succeed”

adds Massimo Gaetani (in the picture on the left), marketing director and co-founder. Massimo continues:

“when they start offering their services to the general public, they realise that clients are not queuing outside their door and the phone is not ringing constantly; that’s a normal but de-motivating way of starting”

People who are not used to running small businesses are simply not ready or trained  to deal with the new challenges and many struggle to make a decent living for months or even years.  In many occasions they give up and go back to full time occupation which, now more than ever, is not always an easy thing to do.  Salus Wellness offers, apart from the newly decorated and well maintained therapy rooms and full time reception, a comprehensive range of business development and practice management services for all practitioners working at their premises; this increases the chances for everybody’s success and  creates the win-win-win situation which Salus Wellness is known for.

Salus Wellness collects £155 to help Japanese recovery

The devastating combination of natural calamities which hit Japan last month is, without doubts, one of the most dramatic moments in our recent history. With estimated damages in excess of 200 billion dollars we should all consider what we can do to help those who survived this terrible tragedy and found themselves with no house or other possessions.

At Salus Wellness we organised a successful fundraising event on Saturday 9 April.  The event, called Complementary Health for Japan, managed to collect £155 all of which was paid to Oxfam toward their Japan’s Earthquake/Tsunami Appeal.

During the day, several practitioners from Salus Wellness offered free taster sessions lasting between 20 and 30 minutes and accepted a voluntary donation. Treatments included:

  • Sport and Remedial massage
  • Hypnotherapy
  • Energy Healing
  • Reflexology
  • Reiki

Luca Senatore, Sales Director at Salus Wellness commented: “we hope that the day we dedicated to this cause can make a difference, however small, to somebody affected by this terrible disaster. We very grateful to all practitioners that donated their time and expertise to help people with their treatment and enabled us to create this event.”

Homeopathy and Bach Flowers for Hayfever

According to the British Allergy Foundation, approximately one in four of the UK population will suffer from an allergy, such as hayfever.

At this time of year, people come to see a practitioner with symptoms of hayfever, such as sneezing, runny noise, sore, itchy eyes, itching in the ears and back of the throat.

Symptoms vary for each individual which is why different remedies are used for each patient.  Constitutional treatment is best used to stop symptoms returning, however, during an acute crisis, an acute prescription can be given.  Once the acute crisis is over, it is advisable to go for constitutional treatment which will take into account the imbalance shown by the immune system.

Acute homeopathic remedies used for hayfever can include:

Allium Cepa – this can be given when the nose and eyes are streaming and there is severe and frequent sneezing.  Often symptoms are worse in the morning, indoors and when in contact with flower pollen.

Arsenicum Album – when there is tickling of the nose in one spot “as from a feather”, there is acrid, watery dripping from the nose which is totally obstructed and there are burning pains in the nose, eyes and throat.    Sores can develop inside the nostrils.  They person can feel better in a warm room.

Euprasia- can be given for very watery eyes when you feel that there is something in your eyes and you want to constantly rub them.  The eyelids can be swollen and there can be a discharge from them causing them to gum up.  A soothing eye wash can be used by diluting one drop of Euphrasia  tincture in an eye bath with sterile water and bathing the eyes.

Sabadilla- for persistant sneezing and constant itching and tingling inside the nose.  The nose can feel stuffed up and there can be transparent mucus.  The eyes can water from sunlight, in the open air and while sneezing.  They can be worse in the open air and from pollens, expecially from flowers.

Bach flower remedies

Bach flower remedies can help you deal with the emotional symptoms associated with hayfever.  There are 38 flower remedies, however, the most common ones used in the treatment of hayfever are Beech and Holly.  Beech is given when you experience emotional and physical intolerance caused by the symptoms of hayfever and this can be combined with Holly if you are experiencing fits of sneezing and feeling irritated, angry and resentful.

Other options

Other options include eating honey made locally which has sometimes been helpful to patients, although it should be used with caution due to occasional severe allergic reactions, taking flax seed oil, stinging nettle capsules, Quercitin, Vitamin C and Vitamin B6.  If you wish to find out more about these options, you may consider consulting a naturopath.

Contact me if you would like further details or a consultation.

Don’t let the misery of hay fever affect your quality of life.

This guidance is not recommended as a substitute for advice from a qualified and registered homeopath but a reference to help in the treatment of hay fever. If any symptoms persist you should consult your doctor.  Homeopathy can be used in conjunction with conventional medicine but it’s important that both your homeopath and doctor are aware of any drugs and remedies you are currently taking.
